TRACK WORK AT WINGATUI

IMPRESSIVE TRIAL BY DEPLOY "The Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN, June 23. During the trials at Wingatui this morning, most interest was taken in candidates for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. Deploy, winner of the Winter Handicap, seven furlongs, on the first day of the recent meeting at Wingatui, was one of the most impressive workers. Ridden by his trainer, L. J. Clutterbuck, the Defaulter four-year-old was galloping easily on terms with Red Tinge to the home turn. Then he outdistanced his companion. The opening three furlongs was covered in 38sec, and Deploy completed the six furlongs in Imin 21 2-ssec. In his last two starts, both over six furlongs, Deploy finished unplaced, but the distance of the Seadown Handicap—a little more than a mile—should be more to his liking. The trials were held on the inside grass and on the plough, and both tracks were heavy. A cold wind made conditions unpleasant. Aranga’s Trial , Aranga, which has been placed in her last three starts, was finishing on at the end of five furlongs to shade Set Fair and Absence in Imin 7sec, after taking 25 1-5 sec for the opening two furlongs. Aranga has drawn one of the outside stalls in the Opiki Handicap, and her stablemate, Set Fair, has been balloted out in the same 'event. Countenance and Brutus finished on terms, with four lengths to Lady Wanaka and a length to Gypsy Boy, after covering the last six furlongs of a mile in Imin 23 4-ssec. The last three furlongs took 43 l-ssec. Countenance was the first to show out, and goifig to the home turn was a length clear of Brutus and Lady Wanaka. Brutus moved up to the leader over the concluding stages, and finished well. Royal Tower covered the same ground alone in Imin 27 2-ssec, the opening three furlongs in 43 2-ssec.

On the grass, the promising steeple- 1 chaser Irish Glance, which has been placed in his last three starts, advanced in favour for the Pareora Hack Steeples after a sound gallop over one mile and a quarter. He finished full of running to head Robin Redbreast by a length and a half, with a similar distance to Chief Stuart. They covered the last seven furlongs in Imin 44 3-ssec, and were finishing on over the last three in 44 3-ssec. The Irish Lancer gelding has qualified with the hunt club, and judged by his appearance, he has benefited by the change of work.

Addition Pleases An Elloughton Handicap candidate, Addition, was too good for her companions over seven furlongs. The last six took Imin 27 3-ssec, and the last three 45 4-5 sec. The Seigfried mare was galloping nicely to finish a length and a half clear of Waffles, with a length to Sylvan. Sylvan (A. J. Murray) and Waffles (L. Smith) were then schooled, and jumped well over two hurdles. Mill Bird covered the same ground in Imin 32sec. She was edsed up after covering the first three in 43sec. Rascoli showed improvement w’hen worked. in a hood, and shaded Wayren and Snuffbox at the end of five furlongs in Imin 11 3-ssec, the last three in 44 2-5 sec. Half Sovereign equalled this time when she finished better than Abbot's Choice. The last three furlongs took 44 2-ssec. Fortnight and Rpyal Monarch worked well over half a mile in 54 3-ssec, the Opening furlong in 13sec. Copperfield and Fair Night finished ahead of Rudolph over half a mile in 56sec, the last three in 42 3-ssec. Mararoyal was not extended to gallop her last three furlongs in 43 3-ssec. Roygbiv. which was educated as a jumper when he was a member of J. S. McKay's team, recorded a good round over six hurdles. He set a fast pace to lead Sir Miladieux, with Windrush bringing up the rear. Apart from the last fence, at which he slipped after landing. Roygbiv jumped well. Sir Miladieux showed promise considering' his limited experience. ,
