SOUEPI WINS ASCOT GOLD CUP

LONDON, June 18. Souepi won the Ascot Gold Cup run over 20 furlongs at Ascot today. Souepi beat Aram by a short head with Le Bourgeois three lengths away third. Two furlongs from home Souepi was lying in third place behind the favourite Aram and Le Bourgeois. Souepi quickly mastered Le Bourgeois and in a great finish caught Aram in the last stride to win in one of the most exciting finishes seen in the event. The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, and the Duke of Gloucester, attended the meeting. ' The placings in the cup were:—Souepi (Epigram-Sousse), Elliott 1; Aram 9-0 2; Le Bourgeois 9-0 3. Short head; three lengths. Time, 4min 35 l-ssec. Souepi is owned and trained by Mr George Digby. The prize money of £13,600 was divided as follows:—first £11,560, second £1360. third £6BO.
DALRAY SOUND AFTER * GALLOP AT GEELONG
Dalray showed no signs of lameness after he gave an exhibition gallop at Geelong this week. The gallop was watched by his Riccarton trainer. C. C. McCarthy, who returned to Christchurch yesterday after a six-day visit to Australia. McCarthy Is keen to return to Australia, but he is finding difficulty in buying good horses ifi New Zealand to make the trip. Dalray and Grand Boy, both owned by Mb C. Neville and trained by McCarthy, broke down durin* their autumn camP£ ]\fcCarthy has Trench Fray and Finance in work at Riccarton and has started on the education of Dalray’s half-brother, which cost Mr Neville 5000gns at the national yearling sales in January. . <
