FIRE DESTROYS HOMESTEAD
STATION MANAGER’S ESCAPE " The eight-roomed homestead of the glen Hope sheep station, 25 miles from Hanmer, on the Lewis Pass road, was destroyed by fire about 12.30 a,m. on Thursday. The owner is Mr R. L. Sutherland, of 149 Clyde road, Christchurch, who lived at the station until his retirement a few years ago. The 75,000-acre station has been managed for some years by Mr G. Quigley, who, when awakened by the fire, barely had time to leave the house by a Window before. the corrugated iron roof collapsed. He saved a few clothes, but had no time to secure money that he kept in a chest of drawers in Ms bedroom. Mr Quigley, the sole occupant of the house, said that he was unable to dp anything but stand in the cold and watch the single-storey wooden bouse razed to the ground. The glow from flames, which shot about 50 feet in the air, was visible at the neighbouring Glynn Wye Station. Work would continue on the station when temporary huts had been built, sara Mr Quigley, who has been staying at the Glynn Wye Station.
