CONQUEST OF EVEREST

Sir, —In your paper this morning I read something very pathetic to me—- “ Tensing Bhotia’s fellow giudes, porters and others had collected the fabulous sum to them of £l3 to present to him.” Could not we in New Zealand, Edmund Hillary’s fellow countrymen, do something, too, to show how greatly we appreciate the honour which Hillary has brought to us, and so recognise the part which Tensing played in the ascent of Mount Everest. Possibly we could also in some way help his village. And with the world as it is today, a kindly gesture from one country to another must help us all to world peace. I willingly will subscribe.— Yors, etc., LET US ALL HELP. June 11, 1953.
