RUGBY FOOTBALL AUCKLAND BEATS WAIKATO

GENERAL SUPERIORITY

SHOWN (New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, June 2. Beaten both back and forward, Waikato, the holder of the Ranfurly Shield, was defeated by Auckland at Eden Park this afternoon by 17 points to 6. Auckland, which led at half-time by 6 points to 3, scored four tries, one of which was converted, and a penalty goal, to a penalty goal and a dropped goal. The Waikato pack was not up to its usual standard, and the Auckland forwards were running through the opposition during the last 15 minutes. The Auckland backs almost throughout adopted a deep formation. This would have spelled disaster against a livelier inside opposition.

Outstanding players for Auckland in the backs were Scott, at full-back, Trevena, a wing three-quarters, and Morrison, the first five-eighths. In the forwards Skeen shone in the line-outs until he had to retire injured 12 minutes after halftime. He was well supported by R. Katterns and H. White.

Reid, the All Black half, was easily Waikato's best back. In the forwards, Nola, McKenzie, and McLaren all played well.

Tries for Auckland were scored by Trevena (2), Barter, and White. Scott converted one try and kicked a penalty goal from just outside half-way. D. B. Clarke, the full-back, kicked a penalty goal for Waikato, and Nola dropped a goal.
