U.S. ATOM SPIES

STAY OF EXECUTION DENIED

WASHINGTON, May 26. Mr Fred Vinson, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, today denied a stay of execution to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, the convicted atom bomb spies. The denial of their application came after the Supreme Court’s announcement yesterday in which it refused for the third time to review the trial of the Rosenbergs. The Chief Justice acted today on a request by counsel for the Rosenbergs that a stay be granted, pending the filing of a petition for reconsideration of yesterday’s denial.

The Justice Department opposed the request for a stay. It said that any execution date set was likely to be after June 15, which would give the Supreme Court ample “time to act on a new appeal. It said that this made a stay unnecessary.
