N.Z. PRODUCTION OF FOODSTUFFS

GOVERNOR-GENERAL URGES x SUPREME EFFORT (New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, May 27. “New Zealanders need to make a supreme effort to utilise all the land capable of production, and to increase its efficiency so that more and more can be provided for the world’s population," said the Governor-General (Sir Willoughby Norrie) at a civic welcome in New Plymouth today. The world’s population, he said, was growing at an exceedingly rapid rate. It was estimated that today more than two-thirds of the human race was poorly fed. / "Since I was born in 1893, the world has increased by 825,000,000 people," Sir Willoughby Norrie said. “There isn’t a place today for any suggestion of overproduction, because this is not possible, but I agree that distribution sometimes creates a problem.” The discovery of mineral deficiencies in the soil, and the application of small quantities of cobalt, zinc, or molybdenum had in many cases revolutionised farming, he said. “Science and the Eical farmer must walk hand in to obtain the best results,” he added.
