FURTHER DISCUSSION IN SOUTHLAND

The Inclusion of trotting events on racing clubs' programmes was again discussed at the annual meeting of the Southland Racing Owners', Trainers' and Breeders' Association A resolution "that a South Island deputation to the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) be arranged if possible by this association, to protect the interests of galloping.” was passed. Weir), discussing the resolution, said that last season if had been felt that there had been Ministerial interference with some clubs, which had been told that if they eliminated trotting events from their programmes they would incure the possible cancellation of their permits.' He said he was referring 10 the Wyndham Racing Club, which had a visit from the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. A. Bodkin), whose action had caused a stalemate in the association’s activities. Mr Weir said his association would seek the support of the Otago and Canterbury associations. It was not intended to interfere with sma’lsr clubs, which relied on trotting events. A general direction from the meeting would be taken up with discretion with the Otago and Canterbury branches. There was evidence every day that toore racing was needed, said Mr Weir.
