THIEVES STEAL BAR OF GOLD

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 26. Thieves beat police to a bar of gold worth £3500 at a mine in wild mountain country 150 miles north-east of Melbourne early today. The management of the mine had arranged for an armoured police car crew to come to the mine to collect the gold, but while they were asleep at a hotel 10 miles away, the thieves got into the accountant’s house at the mine, took the key of the safe from his clothing while he slept and helped themselves to the gold. A search through the mountains is now going on.
