TALKS ON CHURCH UNION
PROGRESS REPORTED FROM BRITAIN
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 23. Considerable progress is being made in conversations between the Church of Scotland and the Church of England, it was reported to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland now meeting in Edinburgh, states advice received by the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Consultations between the two churches have been in progress for some time.
In a letter received by. the assembly from the Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. G. F. Fisher), it was stated that the Convocation of Canterbury and York “noted with satisfaction the recommendations of the consultative committee, that there should be opportunity sought for the continuance of conference from time to time with a view to the formation of a longterm policy looking to the reintegration of Christendom.” The letter also said that the convocation agreed that duly accredited ministers of the Church of Scotland, may be permitted by a bishop to preach in a Church of England church at services other than the Holy Communion when in the bishop’s judgment, the giving of such permission would set forward the ideal of Christian reunion.
