WORLD DAIRY PRODUCE

INCREASE IN U.S. AND AUSTRALIA

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 24. Figures contained in a report issued by the New Zealand Dairy Marketing Commission point to increasing supplies of dairy produce on the wdrld markets.

Production in the United States from January I to April 30 this year has risen spectacularly over the output for the same period in 1952. Creamery butter figures are at 205,000 tons, an increase of more than 31 per cent., and Cheddar cheese production reached 135.000 tohs, an increase of nearly 34 per cent. Price support purchases by the United States Government have accounted for about onethird of the output of both these commodities. Under the price support scheme, produce is distributed at low prices to State and private Welfare organisations and the Army. Australian dairy production has begun to rise again, and figures for the eight months ending on February 28 of Uns year are only slightly below those for the corresponding period in 195051, showing that the production trend has been resumed after the set-back last year, says the report. This is reflected in increased exports from Australia to the United Kingdom of butcheese, whole milk powder, skim milk powder, and sweetened whole condensed milk.

Dairy imports Into the United Kingdom were higher during the first three months of this year than they Were in the first quarter of 1952. The figures for butter, unsweetened whole milk and sweetened skim milk show .a decrease, but the report adds that in the case of butter they do not picture, as quantities * OBI New Zealand at Mr 4, ? Of were not recorded for that month. Also, there has been a temporary diversion of greater quantities of butter from this country to other markets, particularly in Europe.
