McCarthy seeks APOLOGY

Speech By Mr Attlee

(Rec. 12.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 14. Senator Joseph McCarthy (Republican, Wisconsin) said today that Britain should apologise lor what he termed “a cheap attack" by the former British Prime Minister (Mr Attlee) on President Eisenhower and the American P ®' Conservative Party and members of the House of Commons, Senator McCarthy said, sat .silently on Tuesday while Mr Attlee made "one of the most insulting speeches ever made in the legislative body of a recipient nation' against an ally which has been pouring out her economic lifeblood for practically every other nation on the earth.”

In a speech prepared for delivery to the Senate, Senator McCarthy replied to Mr Attlee’s statement that there were elements in the United States which did not want a truce in Korea in these words: "Comrade Attlee knows full well that this nation, which has contributed so much in agony, blood, and tears, does want peace m Korea and peace throughout the world. But peace with honour—peace without surrender.” He offered a copy of a photograph “of Mr Attlee giving the Communist clenched fist salute while reviewing Communist troops in Spain in 1937,” Senator McCarthy’s text contained no mention of Mr Attlee’s reported remark that “one wonders” who wielded greater power in American foreign policy—Mr Eisenhower or Senator Mc-
