It is the first of its kind to be produced in the country, and is expected to be °f great value to research workers. It will also enable libraries to avoid unnecessary duplication in subscriptions and holdings, and will assist in the working of the inter-library loan system. The compiler of the “Union List” for nine years was Mr John Harris, librarian of the University of Otago. When Mr Harris went overseas in 1948, responsibility for the present list was assumed by the National Library Centre of the National Library Service. Publication of the list by the service was approved by the Government. Supplementary lists will be issued as they become necessary. The National Library Centre is also compiling a union catalogue of nonfiction books held in Dominion libraries. When completed, this is expected to contain 750.000 titles.
