TECHNICAL SCHOOLS IN MALAYA

LANGUAGE PROBLEM The English language is used for instruction in the technical schools of Malaya but explanations in other tongues aften cause problems of translation. This difficulty was mentioned yesterday by all three of a group OT Malayan technical teachers who are visiting Christchurch on holiday from study in Auckland under the Colombo plan - Mr D. S. Dass, of Perak, teachra electrical engineering; Mr G. Eammanuel, of Malacca, teaches building; and Mr Ali Bin Adam, of Singapore, teaches plumbing. The teachers said that Malayas, Chinese, and Eurasians attended the technical schools. They might know English, Malay, and their native tongue. When technical explanations could not be understood in English, translation into other languages sometimes made big demands on teachers.
