BUSES IN THE SQUARE

BOARD ACCEPTS COUNCIL PLAN CR. BALDWIN PROPOSES ALTERNATIVE A plan for the handling of buses in Cathedral square prepared by two officers of the Christchurch City Council had been accepted by the Transport Board in place of the board’s own plan, said the Mayor (Mr B. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) yesterday. The plan, together with proposals by Cr. C. Baldwin, a member of the council's traffic committee, would be considered by the Metropolitan Licensing Authority soon, said Mr Macfarlane. The council's plan provided for the abolition of 75 per cent, of the present gyratory system, which had proved very satisfactory, said Cr. Baldwin yesterday. It featured four-way traffic through the Square, and would create difficulties and traffic hazards. His own plan retained the gyratory syrtem and still placed the town termini for all but three buses in the Square, Cr. Baldwin said. These three would start their services from Worcester street east. The buses starting from the Square would have their stops sited at the present zones. There would be two lanes of traffic in front of the Cathedral, and the Godley Plot would be grassed further out.
