GENERAL RATE IN PAPARUA
LOWER LEVY BY COUNCIL
HIGHER RETURNS FROM NEW VALUATIONS Although the Paparoa County Council will collect an additional £5500 in general rates in the next financial year, the increases in the valuation of the county will enable a reduction to be made in the rate in the £ from 1 l-5d to Id. The valuation of the county has increased from £3,800,000 to £7,900,000. The new rate, estimated to produce £24,734, with general receipts of £24,915, will cover the year’s programme of works estimated to cost £49,600. Total receipts under all headings are estimated at £78,300. . Notice of motion was given at a meeting of the council last evenini that a rate of Jd in the £ be levied to produce £19,890, excluding the Hornby county township; that with a view of carrying forward a credit balance in the hospital levy account at March 31, 1954, to assist in financing the increased levy due in 1954-55 a rate of l-5d in the £ be levied; and that the charge of ratepayers for the sanitation service be £2 12s 6d and that the sum of Is a service due to the city council for use of its dump be paid from the general account. A report oij a special meeting of the finance committee held to consider the estimates said that in order to finance fully the programme of works set out in tiie estimates the amount required by rate amounted to £34,165. Consideration had been given to the schedules of new works as prepared for each riding and while the opinion was expressed that the works detailed were most desirable it has realised that the full programme, even if finance was made available, could not be carried out in the year.
