SOUTH ISLAND SPEEDBOATS SET NEW RECORDS OVER A KILOMETRE COURSE.—The record-breaking speedboats Pacific Spot and Tempest V on the Estuary on Saturday. Pacific Spot, driven by D. V. Syme, of Christchurch, established a New Zealand and Australian record for 91 cubic inch V-bottom boats with a speed of 43.268 miles an hour. This is 3.379 miles an hour better than the former record. The world record is 45.4 miles an hour. Tempest V, a new 255 cubic inch hydroplane driven by D. Hall, of Blenheim, easily broke the New Zealand record for its class (61.276 miles an hour) with a speed of 66.38 miles an hour.
