SURREY OUT FOR 58

Australia 250 For Nine (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, May ft Australia’s attacking field, with anly three fieldsmen, including the bowler, in front of the wicket, has terrified English county batsmen. The ehampiMi county, Surrey, was routed for 58 ram on a lively pitch today, five batsmen being caught behind the wicket. All the batsmen were out to the fast bowlers, and R. Archer took six for 28. Earlier victims of Australia’s attack were Yorkshire (runner-up in the 1952 county championship) and Leicestershire (sixth). Australia at stumps today had scored a mediocre 250 for the loss of nine wickets, but, with a lead of nearly 200, is well on the way to its third successive win of the tour. The Australian fielding today was again firstclass. Archer deserved his success, in spite of the pathetic strokes made by the Surrey batsmen. Lindwall got a good wicket this morning when Peter May, the promising test prospect, was caught by the wicketkeeper for a duck. Lindwall has begun most of the debacles by county batsmen. In his three matches he has taken a wicket in his first over. Hole and Harvey batted well for Australia, adding 89 runs for the second wicket. Alec Bedser, who took four wickets, will be a threat to the Australians in the test series. 5 The biggest crowd of the tour—3o,ooo —watched play. Members of the Services contingents from New Zealand and Australia, here for the Coronation, were among the spectators. Scores:— SURREY First Innings E. Bedser, c Lindwall, b Davidson .. 19 D. INNINGS LOSS TO YORKSHIRE

HUTTON AND YARDLEY MAKE TOP SCORES LONDON, May 8. The Australian cricketers beat Yorkshire by an innings and 94 runs. Th* Yorkshire batsmen collapsed again la the second innings and were dismissed for 214. Only Hutton (65) and Yardley (56 not out) fought back. Hutton pl ayed with unusual caution for the greater part of his innings. Alan Davidson made a grand debut as a substitute for the injured Johnston when called upon to bowl spinners today. He took two for 48 off 31 overs. One of his victims was Hutton. who was caught in the slips when he seemed well set. Hill, who finished with four for 61. was unlucky, as Hutton was missed twice off him by the wicket-keeper, Langley. It was a bad day for Langley, who did not seem to be able to settle down. TWO AUSTRALIANS NOT FIT

LONDON, May 8. A. L Hassett, the Australian captain, who withdrew from the match against Yorkshire, has been advised by doctors to rest his right arm for three weeks. W. Johnston injured a leg at East Molesey two weeks ago and doctors cannot yet say when he will be fit for play. A later message says that Hassett, i who. with Johnston and McDonald, visited a London specialist, is likely to miss only one more match before resuming in the side.
