(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, May 8. Britain’s trade deficit became worse in April, the President of the Board of Trade (Mr Peter Thorneycroft) said tonight. He said that provisional figures showed that the deficit was £69,600,000 in April, compared with a monthly average for the first quarter of £53,900,000, and with the March figure of £62,000,000. Britain’s imports rose to £29,340,000, compared with £28,570,000 in March. Exports were slightly higher at £214,800,000, compared with £212,900,000 in March. Re-exports fell slightly, the total being £9,000,000, compared with £10,700,000 in March. Mr Thorneycroft did not disclose the export totals to the United States and Canada, which usually accompany the provisional figures.
