“DOUBT CAST ON PEACE MOVE”
American Leaders' Statement (Rec. 8 p m.) WASHINGTON, May 8. The Vietminh invasion of Laos cast doubt on the Communist overtures, President Eisenhower and the Prime Minister of Canada (Mr St. Laurent) said today in a joint statement at the end of their two-day conference. The two leaders say they saw in the Communist invasion of Laos a new act of aggression which could have serious consequences for Siam and the whole of South-east Asia. The statement said that Mr Eisenhower and Mr St. Laurent, in surveying the world situation, had given emphasis to recent developments in the Soviet Union and the Soviet orbit, and their effects on the non-Com-munist world.
It was agreed that while every effort should be made to bring about a relaxation of the current tensions, free nations could not afford to diminish their efforts towards the achievement of united strength and ability to meet agression. Acts not words, they said, would be proof of Communist intentions.
