Labour Gains In Britain (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, May 8. Early results in the municipal elections held yesterday show big gains for Labour, particularly in North England. Labour took control from the Conservatives in Manchester, Leeds, Plymouth, Oldham, Swindon, Grimsby, Dewsbury, Nottingham, High Wycombe, Carlisle and Stoke Newington (London). The majorities in a number of Conservative-held councils were reduced. At the end of overnight counting, Labour had gained 280 seats and lost 51, the Conservatives had gained 82 and lost 206, the Liberals had gained nine and lost 13. and Independents gained 27 and lost 128. Outside London. Labour gains totalled 279 seats and losses 52 distributed among 289 boroughs, while the Conservatives gained 82 seats and lost 206. The elections were the climax of contests throughout Britain during the week. A clear picture Of the national situation will not be available until all the results are checked. In the
provinces and the London suburban area only a third of each council was up for election. The Conservative Party leader, Sir Geoffrey Hutchinson, said his party had expected to lose seats throughout the country, “compared with the Conservative peak year of 1950.”
