DUTCH BALL

HOLLAND’S NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATED „The birthday of Queen Juliana and Holland’s national day, which are both observed on April 30, were celebrated “ informal ball arranged by the Netherlands Club. Christchurch for the Dutch community and their New Zealand friends, and held in the Scottish Hall last evening. It was attended by about 300 persons, who were welconaed by the president of the club (Mr C. Hoefsloot), The hall was effectively decorated with greenery, the New Zealand Ensign, and pictures of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard draped with the " Dutch flag. The tables set with savoury meats and cheeses were placed round the room in Continental cabaret style, and featured small bowls of orange flowers, symbols of the House of Orange. After the singing of the National Anthem and the Dutch National Anthem, dancing began with a polonaise—a traditipnal dance of Holland. Popular items were presented by Mr Galavanzi. a former cabaret artist in Holland, and Hawaiian music was played by Dutch musicians The ball was arranged by the club’s committee, comprising Messrs C. Hoefsloot (president). D. J Everse (secretary). A. J. A. M. Hairing, D Gryns and Mrs W. Geerkens and Mrs Ten Have.
