RICH SPRINT AT BRISBANE
N.Z. HORSES RACED. BADLY t (From the Australian Correspondent o] “The Press") . SYDNEY, May 5. Red Jester, Off Hand, and Regoli failed badly in the £lO,OOO Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane on Saturday. The race was won by Suncup, a three-year-old colt by Sun Storm (imp.), a sire closely related to Sun King (imp.), which is now in New South Wales after a successful period at Mr Ken Austin's Inglewood Stud at Kaiapoi. Suncup ran to the front shortly after the start, and turned into the straight about three lengths clear of his nearest opponent. He then went further ahead, and was untroubled to beat the Queensland mare. Maltmaid, with the Sydney three-year-old, French Echo, third. At the top of the straight Regoli was in the call, but he lacked the dash to make further ground in the two-furlong run home. Red Jester began smartly enough, and was racing in the middle of the field and close enough in normal circumstances, when he struck a very soft patch on the rain-soaked track. Red Jester does not like soft going, and quickly dropped back until he had only four horses behind him, with only three furlongs to go. In the straight he produced a run that carried him up in the field, but he was only ninth at the judge, even though he was galloping better than any of the horses near him. Regoli was near him, but looked tired as he reached the post. Off Hand was never in the picture, and beat only a few horses home. Favourite/ Tarien, Fails The Doncaster Handicap winner, Tarien, was backed to favouritism in one of the greatest betting plunges seen on a Brisbane racecourse for many years. Early .on race day a clearance for her arrived from the Australian Jockey Club, whose stewards had completed their Inquiry into the finding of a stimulant, eoromine, in specimens taken from her after she had won the Doncaster Handicap at Randwick. The stewards had disqualified Tarien for the Doncaster, but had reported that they could' not say who had administered the drug. Tarien ran badly. She was one of the first to get going, but soon after the start she floundered in a soft patch, and this ••"t bar back In the field. However, she
moved up on the outside and was fairly prominent on the turn. But when her rider, G. Moore, asked her for a sprint she did not respond, and she was merely plodding along in the finish. If the stable had not bet so confidently it might have been supposed that the mare had trained off or that the increased I weight was too much for her.
