HYDATIDS CASES ON WEST COAST
THREE MEMBERS OF ONE FAMILY AFFECTED Investigation of a case of lung hydatids reported from a West Coast rural district, has disclosed that two other members of the same family have been infected. The Health Department officer at Greymouth (Mr P. P. Ollisoff) said yesterday that this emphasised the great need for proper control of farm dogs, with regular use of arecolin tablets and care in handling the animals, as they could be distributors of a serious infection. Investigations had shown that another male member of a family of six had already been operated on lor lung hydatids, and a third had been proved a positive case and was awaiting treatment. he said. The other three had yet to be examined. The discovery of two more cases takes the West Coast total to four this year, an eight-year-old boy having also been reported to be suffering from the disease. It is thought, however, that the disease in this case was contracted from farm dogs in another province.
