WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FEDERATED FARMERS

Hamner Springs.— Mrs Malaquin presided at the February meeting of the Hanmer Springs branch of the Women’s Division. of Federated Farmers. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect, to the memory of Miss Stewart and Mrs Warman, who died recently. A donation 6f , £l2 12s was made to the Community Chest. It was also reported that Mrs Flem- , ing, of Cust. would be in charge of a “one-day school” on floral art this month. It was announced that the dressmaking classes, which were to start soon, were full. An appeal was made for magazines for the men in camp. Miss Hodson gave a talk on flowers. Competition results were:—jar raspberry jam: Mrs Sewell and Mrs O’Loughlin (equal) 1, Miss Carrodus 2. Jar preserved raspberries: Miss Lahmert. Best carrot: Miss Carrodus 1, Mrs O’Loughlin 2. Large bloom: Mrs Sullivan 1, Mrs Killoh and Mrs Gasson (equal) 2. ; Small bloom: Mrs Killoh 1, Mrs Farrow 2, Miss Carrodus 3. Richfield 2. Decorative class: Mrs O. Williams 1, Mrs Kilian 2. Vegetables: Mr C. Jenkins and Mr D. Helps (equal) 1. Most outstanding decorative exhibit: Mrs Kilian. Glenroy.—Miss C. Phillips presided at the March meeting of the Glenroy branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. and read the report of the executive meeting. She also presented silver spoons to Mesdames Thompson and Ballagh. Packets of sweets were handed in for the Jubilee Home. Competition results were: —gladiolus, one spike: Mrs Dennis 1, Mrs Pearce 2, Mrs Marsh 3. Flowers—large bloom: Mrs Gray 1, Mrs Lewendowski 2, Mrs Dennis 3. Small bloom: Mrs Pearce 1, Mrs Dennis 2, Mrs Ballagh 3. Cluster: Miss C. Phillips 1, Mrs Dennis 2, Mrs Marsh 3. The Letitia Hunt vase was won by Mrs Dennis. The hostesses were Mesdames Montgomery, Pearce, and Charles. Lyndon-Waiau. Competition results were as follows at the monthly meeting of the Lyndon-Waiau branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers: salad on a saucer: Mrs Lorgelly 1. Mrs McKinnon 2, Mrs Bowis 3. Flowers (floating bowl in a coupe): Miss Smale 1 Miss F. Beaven 2, Mrs McKinnon 3. Tai Tapu.—Mrs Biddick presided at the March meeting of the Tai Tapu branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. Letters were received from G. Maniotes, the Greek boy sponsored by the branch, thanking members for parcels received. It was agreed to send him a raincoat, as requested. A letter was also read from the secretary of the Lincoln District High School Committee expressing thanks for the United Nations flag given by the members. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs D. Hamilton, sen., in her illness, and with Miss Smith, in her bereavement. Hostesses were Mesdames W. Barnett, J. Moody, and C. L. Sparrow. Mrs Sparrow introduced Mr John Akiyama, from Japan, who gave a talk on worsen in Japan, contrasting their lives since adopting Western civilisation with their way of life before the war. Mr Akiyama replied to many Questions and was accorded a vote of thanks.

Belfast.—The March meeting of the Belfast branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers was held in the Returned Services’ Association Hall. Mrs Gower gave a short talk on the interprovincial conference held at Ashburton. Nominations were received for the provincial executive. A collection of biscuits was sent to Rannerdale Home. A talk and oisplay of dried and painted grasses and berries for winter decoration was Mrs Chapman, of the Halswell branch. Results of competitions were:--special bloom: Mrs J. Crawford 1, Mrs S. tarquhar 2 Small bloom: Mrs Gower 1, Mrs Kempthorne 2. Large bloom: Mrs Farquhar 1, Mrs Chilton 2. Decorative: Mrs Crawford 1, Mrs Farquhar 2.
