BOXING

CARRUTHERS TO MEET LYN PHILP

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, April 8. The world bantam-weight champion, Jimmy Carruthers, is three "warm up” fights before risking his title in Sydney. One of these fights is to be against the New Zealander, Lyn Philp. Carruthers’s manager, Dr. J. McGirr, said that Carruthers, his trainer, Bill McConnell, and himself, had agreed that Carruthers would benefit by three nontitle fights. Dr. McGirr said: “Carruthers probably will have two non-title fights in Rhodesia and then a bout against Lyn Philp in New Zealand. Carruthers has had only 11 rounds of actual fighting in 12 months and he needs regular fights to keep his title.”
