MAGISTRATE'S COURT

TUESDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) INTOXICATED MOTORIST Stanley John Alderdice, aged 32, a panel beater, pleaded guilty to a charge that on April 6, while in a state of intoxication, he was in charge of a motor-car in Bealey avenue. ... He was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment with hard labour; his driver’s licence was cancelled, and he was disqualified from obtaining another for 12 months. Sub-Inspector J. C. Fletcher said that Alderdice was taken to the police station bv Senior Patrol Officer J. Brown, of the City Council traffic department, who had seen the car being driven erratically in Bealey avenue. Alderdice was examined by a doctor and certified as unfit to drive. “You not only Endangered yourself, Alderdice, but you also endangered your wife and children,” said the Magistrate. DISORDERLY BEHAVIOUR Ernest Roy Lewis, aged 25, and William Hicks, aged 22, both labourers, pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner in the foyer of Storey’s Tourist Hotel on April 6. John Peter Hawkins, aged 27, a labourer, pleaded guilty to a charge of being founcl without lawful excuse, but in circumstances that did not disclose the intention to commit any other offence, in Storey’s Tourist Hotel on April 6. The three cases were heard together, and each man was fined £3.

Detective-Sergeant G. W. Alty said that at 9.30 p.m. the licensee of the hotel was told that one man was entering the hotel by way of a fire escape, assisted by two other men. A search was made and Hawkins was found. He said he was looking for a man. He was taken to the office and then the other two entered the hotel and tried to rescue him. They were under the influence of liquor. There seemed to be nothing else to it. FINED FOR DRUNKENNESS Thomas Joseph Ward Hogan, aged 45, a ‘painter, was fined £2 on a charge of being found drunk in High street on April 6, having been once previously convicted of a similar offence within the last six months. REMANDED James Robert Ashworth, aged 44, a dental mechanic, and Alfred George Trigance, aged 43, a Post Office employee, were remanded to April 14 on a charge of assaulting a woman at Hurunui on April 4. Each was allowed bail on his own recognisance of £25, on condition that he report daily to the police.

TRAFFIC OFFENCES Penalties were imposed as stated in the following prosecutions, brought by the Transport Department, for breaches of the traffic regulations:— No warrant, of fitness: Jack Bennett, 10s (using unlicensed motor vehicle, 10s): James Nicol Burnett, costs only (no tail light, costs only); Alfred John Ferguson, costs only (no warrant of fitness for trailer, costs only; using unlicensed motor vehicle, costs only). Excessive overhang at rear of truck: Bowman’s, Ltd., £l. No vehicle authority: Vincent Llewellyn Davies and William Alexander Davies, 5s each (no indication disc, costs (only). Passing traffic on intersection: John Turner Dauncey, £2. Defective silencer on motor-cycle: Roland Seaforth Grant. £2. Exceeding speed limit: Ernest Peter Henshaw, £2; Frank Darce Prestige, £2. No front number-plate: James George McCluskey, 10s. Failing to give way to tram: Arthur Augustus Stokes, 30s. Driving without due care and attention: Joseph Aloysius Rooney, £2.
