NEW KOKATAHI BRIDGE

SETTLERS SEEK EARLY COMPLETION (From Our Own Reporter) HOKITIKA, March 24.

Of modern design and of 14 arches, the new ferro-concrete bridge over the Kokatahi river stands out in the river without approaches. A few yards upstream the ancient , wooden bridge wends its twisted way across the river. Settlers say the next big flood will sweep away the crazy bridge, and that unless the approaches to the new bridge, which was completed some months ago, are hastened, they will be isolated.

The case for the speedy construction of the approaches was outlined today briefly by Mr E. T. Cook, the riding member of the Westland County Council, in his speech of welcome to the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) at Kowhitirangi, where Mr Holland was entertained at afternoon tea. »

“The approach to the bridge is the least of my difficulties. It would be a monument to inefficiency if we left the bridge standing there without the

approaches,’’ replied Mr Hollahd. “We might have to send it to Auckland—(laughter), in which case you would have no approach or a bridge.”
