HOSPITAL MATRON FROM ENGLAND

MISS THOMAS VISITING CHRISTCHURCH Miss Violet M. P. Thomas, of Ramsgate, Kent.-who recently resigned from the post of matron of the Ramsgate and Margate General Hospitals in Kent, a post she had held for nearly three years, is at present visiting Christchurch. For 15 years before that appointment Miss Thomas was matron of the Ramsgate. Hospital. Yesterday afternoon she visited St. George's Hospital in Christchurch, where her sister. Miss Marjorie Thomas, was a sister for five years before she returned to England eight years ago. Miss Marjorie Thomas is now a home sister at the Margate Hospital. On her visit to St. George's yesterday, Miss Thomas was accompanied by Miss D. A. Watt, who was also formerly on the staff at the hospital and was a friend of Miss Marjorie Thomas. Miss Thomas is spending six months in New Zealand. The main purpose of her visit is to see two brothers. Mr L. W. P. Thomas, who has been in New Zealand for 39 years, is chief clerk at the Porirua Mental Hospital, and the other brother, Mr H. E. Thomas, is a businessman in Dunedin. While in New Zealand, Miss Thomas has, in an unofficial capacity, seen something of the country’s hospitals. She was taken over the Dunedin Hospital and part of the Wellington Hospital, and has also visited the St. Helens Maternity Hospital in Wellington.. She also called on Miss V. M. F. Barnett. Deputy-Director of the Division of Nursing of the Health Department Miss Thomas said that she had been very impressed with all aspects of New Zealand hospitals. Facilities and equipment were very up to date, she said.
