BUSH FIRE NEAR TE ANAU

RAIN COMES AT CRITICAL MOMENT (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 11. Three-quarters of an inch of rain which fell in the Eglinton Valley from 8 p.m. yesterday to 8 a.m. today came at an opportune time for the men fighting the bush fire near Te Anau. Between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. yesterday winds of 35 to 40 miles an hour were sweeping flames to the tree-tops and the situation was becoming critical in spite of all the efforts of the firefighters. Then the rain started. By midday today the most dangerous period appeared to have been passed, provided strong winds and dry weather do not return.
