MINESWEEPER SINKS

54 OF EGYPTIAN CREW DROWNED CAIRO, March 8. The Egyptian minesweeper Solium capsized and sank 15 miles west of Alexandria today. Fifty-four of her crew were drowned. A Polish ship steaming nearby rescued 60 sailors and * officers, one of whom*died later. The Solium was the former Royal Navy vessel, Wedgport (672 tons), which was built to carry a complement of 60. She was launched in 13)41. Several of these Bangor class minesweepers were acquired by Egypt, from the Royal Navy. General Naguib has sent a radio message to the captain of the Polish ship, expressing his deep gratitude to the crew for their efforts in saving the Egyptians.
