MUSEUM PLANS

SUPPORT BY ROYAL SOCIETY The Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand is' appealing for support in its drive to extend the Canterbury Museum as the provincial Centennial memorial. The Museum Trust Board has decided to adopt a restricted part of the original Centennial building plans, namely a self-contained fireproof wing on the museum’s property adjoining Christ’s College. The branch says in a circular that the £85,000 available as the direct result of the Centennial celebrations falls considerably short of the £140,000 needed to complete the wing, and the museum appeal committee plans to extend the appeal throughout the province. “As the Government subsidy of £1 in £3 expires by March 31, there is a particular urgency on the part of all supporting organisations to complete their contribution by this date,” the circular says. Hie director of the Dominion Museum (Dr. R. A. Falla) will give an account of the recent expedition of the Canterbury Museum to the Notornis country at a meeting in the Civic Theatre on March 23 to inaugurate Museum Week.
