23 PRISONERS OF WAR KILLED

New Riot On Yoncho Island TOKYO, March 8. Twenty-three North Korean prisoners of war were killed and 42 were wounded in a riot on Yoncho island yesterday, the United Nations Prisoner of War Command announced today. More than 2000 prisoners took part in the riot Some United Nations troops were slightly injured in quelling the disturbance. Camp officials said the trouble began when a prisoner was ordered to come out of the prison compound after breaking a camp regulation. One official said: “Without warning, about 70 prisoners of war attacked the compound commander and his assistant. An armed United Nations truck driver went to assist the unarmed compound commander and his assistant, and wounded a prisoner. Other prisoners then started a riot, threw stones and tried to break out of the compound.” A United Nations officer said tear gas. failed to quell the rioters, and United Nations guards opened fire. The guards action restored order. Yoncho is a small island south-east of Pusan, near Koje, the scene of the prisoner riots last year. One prisoner was killed on Yoncho last Thursday, when United Nations guards quelled a not there.
