DALRAY BEATEN

CHAMPION INJURES FORELEG ALDERSHOT HAS EASY WIN (N.Z.P.A. —Reuter-Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 8 Dalray was sadly beaten in the Ercfl. doune Stakes at Flemington yesterday ■and finished the race with an injury his near foreleg. He struck himself qq the inside of the fetlock joint in the final furlong of the race. At first it was reported that his futur® was in jeopardy, but he showed no signs of soreness in his box last night, and the owner, Mr Cyril Neville said: think he is all right, but we won't know definitely until the veterinary surgeon examines him.” Dalray had no chance of winning when the injury occurred. He and HydroSS considered his chief rival, were soundly beaten by Aidershot, a former Adelaide Cup winner, carrying 9-3 and starting at 10 to 1.

Aidershot finished 10 lengths ahead of Dalray, with Hydrogen three lengths further back. In the four-horse race, which the Vic. torian Racing Club'committee had chosen to highlight as “the weight-for-age chain, pionship of Australasia,” Dalray and Hy. drogen were always hopeless . The result was a complete surprise. Riding to a plan. Aidershot’s jockey, p a t Glennon, of Adelaide, took Aidershot to the front and kept him there. At the five furlongs he was 10 lengths clear. Be turned for home eight lengths clear and was going away at the finish. Jockeys Blamed The punters claimed later that W Williamson, on Dalray, and D. Munro, on Hydrogen, were watching each other too closely to bother about Aidershot. They abused Munro, and to a lesser extent Wil. liamson, who dismounted when he passed the post and led Dalray back to the enclosure. Williamson told Mr Neville that Dalray had not shown an effort comparable with his race to win the last Melbourne Cup. Mr Neville agreed that Dalray did not have a winning chance when he injured himself. The Sydney filly, Cultured, outclassed her rivals to score easily in the Newmarket Handicap. Her jockey, S. Cassidy, following the plan of the trainer, Allotta, kept a firm rein on the filly until the last half-furlong and then let her go. Cultured went into the lead immediately the barrier went up,, but Cassidy kept her under restraint. Just after she led the field past the furlong post Winlake and Tarien challenged, but Caisidy’s tactics were sound, and he was able to race away to win comfortably. Surang proved she is one of the outstanding two-year-olds of the season by winning the Sires’ Produce Stakes in Imin 24Jsec for seven furlongs. This equalled the race record held by the brilliantsprinters, Gold Rod, Hua, Kuvera, and True Course. Darby Munro was hooted after Advocate’s defeat by Arbroath in the V.R.C. St. Leger. Punters thought Munro showed pooi- judgment in taking Advocate to the front six furlongs from home in a fartrun race. Advocate looked a winner when he led for home from Wodalla and Arbroath, ang still held a useful advantage with a little more than a furlong to go. Advocate wai feeling the strain, however, and Arbroath, responding to hard riding, outstayed him to win by a length and a half. Results: ERCILDOUNE STAKES, Of £2OOO. One mile and a half.
