TRAMWAY TRACK REPAIRS
Sir, —Track repairs are being carried out on Papanui road, and on Monday I counted 15 men and gear, including steam roller, heavy motor truck, tractor, electric plant, power shovel, and many other items. Only two small sections of the track had been opened up, and in each space only about two men could work at one time. I saw two men actually shovelling spoil into the power shovel while the drivers of the vehicles looked on. Nothing was done yesterday, but the driver of the steamroller was there wiping it down. At 5 p.m. the roller was still there, and had not been used all day, as the wheels were rusted. It would be interesting to know what these two small repairs will cost this week alone.— Yours, etc.. C. H. CLEMENS. February 12, 1953. [This letter was referred to the general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell), but to date no reply has been received.]
