DUNEDIN CLUB

RACING

MASTER KEY WINS HANDICAP SECOND LEG WON BY DELAYED Master Key, one of the best-per-formed lightweights in the race, won the Otago Handicap at false odds on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Wingatui on Saturday. He had just failed to lead all the way over a mile and a half at Gore a week earlier, but on Saturday his opponents failed to catch him over 11 furlongs. Master Key, a four-year-old bay gelding, is the only son of the New Zealand Derby winner, St. Bruno, which is still in training at Wingatui. St. Bruno was gelded not long after he was mated with the Nigger Minstrel mare Renmark, which earlier had left two horses of little account. Master Key races in the same colours as St. Bruno, those of Dr. A. A. Reid, for whom he is trained at Wingatui by H. A. Anderton. Master Key was well ridden on Saturday by the trainer’s son. Brian Anderton. Valescure and Royal Tan, the only two Riccarton horses in the field, filled the minor places behind Master Key. Royal Tan had his chance, but Valescure was unlucky. He did not jump out of his starting stall properly and was at the tail of the field of 15 for the first few furlongs. Though forced to cover extra ground round to the home turn, where he still had six horses in front of him, Valescure solidly maintained his run to finish half a length behind the winner. The Treasure Hunt gelding’s effort was an encouraging pointer to his chance in the staying classic races for three-year-olds later in the season. The Christchurch owner, Mr D. McFarlane, had a change of luck when. Delayed narrowly won the Autumn Handicap, the open sprint and second leg of the double. With an apprentice allowance, Delayed’s weight was 7-0, and the five-year-old Defaulter gelding won by a nose from the Invercargill-trained Regardless, which was galloping a shade more strongly on the post. This was Delayed’s first win since the Riverton Easter meeting last year.

The Master Key-Delayed combination carried 142 tickets and paid £203 19s for £l. Kingship maintained his unbeaten record at Wingatui by carrying top weight of 9-10 to a decisive win in the Dunedin Handicap. Fulgent, another Riccartontrained two-year-old in the field—he was having his first start for Mr H. D. Greenwood—was the only runner to get near Mrs J. S. Shaw’s Timanova colt in the straight. The race showed that the Otago and Southland youngsters are a weak lot this season.

Four of the eight winners came from two stables. H. A. Anderton was successfully represented by Irish Wings and Master Key and K. J. Thomson (Riccarton) by Spectral and Denominate. The programme opened in threatening weather, which later improved. The track was in good order, but the attendance was moderate. On-course investments totalled £52,865, including £5295 on the double, compared with £57,427 10s last year. In Front All the Way Master Key, after being in front all the way, kept clear of a solid challenge from Valescure to win the Otago Handicap by half a length. Royal Tan, which had followed Master Key into the straight, was half a length back third.

Valescure was last out of the stalls, and Dreenagh, which had been checked, was also slow to move. Master Key and Gav John were in front inside the first furlong and they set a solid pace for the first half-mile, running it in 50 4-ssec. Master Key and Gay John were followed past the seven furlongs by Admiral’s Keep and Jamell, Scuttle and Cogitation, Reformed, Lady Wanaka, and Royal Tan, Uist, Purple Sage, Kosher, Dreenagh, Addition, and Valescure.

Valescure started to improve his position quickly in the next two furlongs, and he had worked his way forward towards the middle of the field at the half-mile. There Master Key was leading by half a length from Gay John. Royal Tan was another half-length back, and close behind him were Jamell, Admiral’s Keep, and Cogitation.

Royal Tan and Jamell followed Master Key round the home turn, but they could make no impression on the lightweight. Valescure, which was seventh on the borne turn, then made a strong challenge, but he failed by half a length to head Master Key. Royal Tan beat Purple Sage by a length and a quarter for third. Uist made up ground for fifth, just beating Addition. Next to finish were Admiral’s Keep, Cogitation, and the win favourite, Dreenagh. Jamell weakened to eleventh in the run home.

Narrow Win Delayed had the run of the race behind Silence and Tane to the straight in the Autumn Handicap, second leg of the double, and after gaining a slight lead well inside the furlong he just lasted to beat the faster-finishing Regardless by a nose. Delayed raced in line with Tane and Silence in the early stages, but J. Didham restrained him to trail near the five furlongs. At the half-mile he was following Tane and Silence, Persian Gulf and Regardless, and close behind him were Test Flight, King Gundi, and Social News.

Delayed and Regardless were close behind Tane and Silence on the home turn. Tane was one of the first beaten, and first Delayed and then Regardless wore down Silence, which was also caught right on the post by King Gundi. Delayed was a neck in front a few strides from the post, and Regardless just failed to close the gap. King Gundi was half a length back third, and Silence was a nose away fourth. Balmoral, one of the last away, finished solidly for fifth a length behind Silence. Social News was sixth and The Lum, finishing strongly, seventh. Kingship Wins Again Kingship recorded his third successive win in his many starts at Wingatui when he won the Dunedin Handicap, for which he was a firm favourite. After trailing to the straight he drew clear early in the run home. His only challenger after that was Fulgent, but this former North Island two-year-old was two lengths back at the finish. None of the Otago and Southland two-year-olds was in the same class as the winner and runner-up. Super Loch, third, was ►lO lengths behind Fulgent at the finish. Master Penfold led early and was joined after passing the half-mile by Return Flight and Red Tinge. Kingship was in behind them in the trailing position a length clear of Fulgent, which had dwelt slightly after being placed on the outside of the field and had shown brilliant early speed. Kingship ran past Red Tinge just after straightening and he was soon clear. Fulgent finished boldly but he never looked like closing the gap to Mr J. S. Shaw's Timanova colt. Super Loch beat Return Flight by half a length for third. Red Tinge was fifth, close up, and Aranga was next. Slow to move at the start were Booty, Regal Robe, Set Fair, and Fulgent.
