BOWLS
CHAMPION PAIRS THREE ROUNDS PLAYED Play 'in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s champion of champion pairs commenced in very unfavourable conditions on Saturday. In the morning, because of the wet state of the Christchurch green, the only game to be played in the first round was transferred to Cashmere, where conditions were much better. As there were 33 pairs in the championship only one game was played in the first round, the other 31 having byes.
In the afternoon conditions were more favourable, but the second round to be played at the Christchurch and Disabled Services’ greens were delayed until 1.30 p.m., this making the third round finish at nearly 7 p.m. It was surprising how well the bowls were drawing in the afternoon after so much rain during the week, and some very fine bowling was seen. Tne games in this championship are played on the sudden death principle.
On the whole most of the games were very even, although in the first round Reaby (Dallington) beat Johns (Aulsebrooks), 30-5. Reaby was eliminated by Hickman (Sydenham) in the second round, when a very fine exhibition of drawing by all players was seen. Angus and McGarry, a very strong Christchurch combination, lost their first game to Henderson (Cashmere), who had with him Gollop, a very fine lead. Chinnery (Edgeware), a previous open singles winner, was eliminated by Souter and Huddleston, a strong Mount Pleasant pair. The Canterbury pair, Richards and Ashton, had a narrow win, 18-16. over Hayes and Charteris (Belfast), and in this game there was some very fine drawing by Richards.
In the third round Ashton went away well, but a fighting game by Greig and Wilson (St. Albans) gave them a win, 17-16.
Although Reid (Linwood) had a comfortable win in the second round he was no match for Gallagher (United), who beat him 23-3 in the third
McNab, who was lead for Spearman (R.S.A.), had to change his role and take over the position of skip as Spearman was not available. McNab had with him Priddis as a substitute lead, and they won both their games.
Hickman (Sydenham), who with his lead. Fox, played magnificent bowls in the second round, only managed to scrape home 17-16 against Lawrence (New Brighton), who had only a one point win in the second round.
At the conclusion of the play on Saturday only eight of the 33 pairs remained in and the quarter, semi-finals, and final will be played at Elmwood next Saturday.
