AIRCRAFTMAN KILLED

CONCERTED CAR RUNS INTO POLE PURSUIT BY TRAFFIC OFFICER - (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, February 20. Aircraftman C. M. Bell, aged 25, escaped from the hospital of the Royal New Zealand Air Force station at Ohakea about 12.30 p.m. today while he was being held for observation, and drove off in a converted Landrover. At 4.20 p.m. his dead body was taken from the wreck of the car, crumpled against a power pole on the outskirts of New Plymouth. He had evaded several police road blocks and grazed a car at a oneway bridge. For the 26 miles from Stratford to New Plymouth he was pursued by a Transport Department officer, Mr J. A; Mahoney, on a motorcycle at speeds touching 80 miles an hour. He once tried to ride the traffic officer off the road. Aircraftman Bell was a recent immigrant from England.
