COST OF LIVING

CHRISTCHURCH L.R.C. SEEKS INQUIRY

The Christchurch Labour Representation Committee has asked the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) to set up a commission to inquire into the cost of living. The letter, sent by the secretary (Mr J. L. Laby), says:— “I am directed by unanimous resolution of the Christchurch L.R.C. to urge upon you the necessity for the Government to set up a commission to inquire into the cost of living—a petition for which, we understand, was presented by the Hon. M. B. Howard, M.P., on behalf of the Canterbury Housewives’ Union more than 12 months ago.

“In making this request we are mindful of the rapidly-increasing cost of living, which, of necessity, reflects particularly against persons in the lower income group such as pensioners and ordinary wage-earners. “We feel that any alleviation of the present position which may be brought about by recommendations of such a commission would be beneficial not only to individuals in the lower income group but also to the economy of the country as a whole.’’
