NEW ZEALAND TITLES

ATHLETICS

L. A. King Sets Record

For Six Miles

D. DEPHOFF WINS BROAD JUMP

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 20. Competing in the six-mile event at the New Zealand athletic championships in Dunedin today, L. A. King, of Auckland, broke the national record set by Harold Nelson, of Otago, by 14 seconds. King ran barefooted. He finished so far ahead of the other runners that he had been congratulated by his team mates and was collecting his sweatsuit from the other side of the ground by the time the second runner finished. Auckland won a second title when Duncan Clark succeeded in. the hammer throw. Although his distance of more than 160 feet bettered the New Zealand resident record, Clark has not been in the country long enough for his effort to be recognised. Clark holds the New Zealand record at 180 feet, a distance that won for him the Empire Games title at Auckland in 1950 as a competitor for Scotland.

A former Otago champion. J. Hyslop, now of Canterbury, had a keen contest with P. Hellreigel. of Auckland, in the three-mile walk, but experience told over the final few laps, and Hyslop won comfortably. Otago secured its first title when A. G. Lawless won the 220 yards hurdles. He won his heat comfortably, but was given a hard race in the final by F. Walls, of Canterbury.

The standard of sprinting was good without being outstanding, and Otago appears to have an excellent chance of winning the 100 yards final with S.. R. Dawson, who returned even time in both his heat and the semi-final. Canterbury’s T. A. Leonard and D. Dephoff are possibilities. and Auckland has a strong chance with H. R. Carter and C. Masters. The former decathlon champion. D. Dephoff, of Canterbury, won the broad jump by a quarter of an inch after S. R. Dawson had had to retire because of an injury. Dephoff also retired with a muscle injury after only one more jump. Points won so far for the Championship Shield are: Canterbury, 13; Auckland, 13; Otago. 10; Wellington, 5; Waikato. 4.
