SUEZ CANAL TROOPS

Egypt To Demand Evacuation (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) CAIRO, February 19. Egypt next week will formally demand the evacuation of British troops from the Suez Canal, an Egyptian Government spokesman said in Cairo today. The Note will affirm Egypt’s right to unconditional evacuation. It is expected that the Note will clainl that the talks be confined to the organisational phase of evacuation. An earlier message from London said that Britain will start defence talks with Egypt as soon as the Egyptian Government is ready, a Foreign Office spokesman said today. No date had yet been fixed, he- said, and the initiative in arranging the talks must come from the Egyptians. The talks would first cover the future of the British troops in the Canal Zone, and would then proceed to the formation of the Middle East Defence Command proposed by Britain, France, Turkey, and the United States more than a year ago.
