FIRST SCOUT CAMP
45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION To celebrate the forty-fifth anniversary of the first scout camp ever held in New Zealand the Canterbury Boy Scouts’ Association will hold s special camp on the Motukarara racecourse in January next year. Approximately 2500 boys from all parts of New Zealand, the six Australian States, Fiji, and Western Samoa will attend. In 1909 the first scout camp was held at Woodend. The camp chief was Colonel D. Cossgrove,’ the founder of scouting in New Zealand, and later the first Chief Scout. The Boy Scouts' Association hopes to get in touch with some of the boys—now men in their late fifties—who attended the firs! ■camp. Tentative plans\ for the celebration next year include a pilgrimage to the site of the original camp and the establishment of some form of memorial.
A jamboree programme is being planned for the camp at Motukarara. which will last for 10 days. After the camp it is hoped to provide billets for the overseas scouts so that they will have the opportunity to see something of Canterbury and the West Coast. During the camp the overseas scouts will probably be taken to Akaroa.
