OFFICIAL FORECASTS “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, February 19. The weather forecast for Canterbury, issued at 9 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 27 hours following the time of issue, is:— Situation: a very deep depression is east of the Chatham Islands, and an anti-cyclone covering the Tasman Sea and southern New Zealand is spreading north-east. Forecast: moderating south-westerly winds; weather cloudy and cold; showers becoming less frequent. Outlook: cloudy at first, fair later. WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is:— Moderate easterly winds; weather fine; temperatures cool to moderate. Outlook: fair. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER The day in Christchurch yesterday was overcast, with the wind rising to a moderate ’ gale from the south-west in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 61.6 degrees. At midnight, the sky was overcast with a strong south-west wind that in gusts reached gale force. The temperature was 48.0 degrees. The barometer, at 30.009 in (1016.2 millibars), was rising unsteadily.
