WRAPPING OF BREAD

Sir, —In reply to “Oxford Bakery,” there was no hint of lousiness in my letter. I merely stated that I had seen a shop assistant scratch her head and then serve bread. There was no need for ill manners or sarcasm. Ido provide my own bag each time the bread is collected, but what is the use if it is contaminated before I call for it?—Yours’, etc., . s WRAP UP. Belfast, February 19, 1953. Sir, —I sympathise with all those consumers who desire hygienically handled bread, but there is a very simple remedy—they can make the bread themselves. This is what I have done for the last 15 years. Observing how unhygienically bread was handled the first morning of zoning many years ago, I was shocked into determining to make the bread myself and so secure safety for my family. It is no worse than making a batch of scones and we enjoy a 100 per cent, wholemeal loaf, which is delicious. We eat it to the last crumb, even if four days old.—Yours, etc.. UP AND DOING. February 19, 1953. Sir,—lt seems to be a farce from start to finish. Who knows if the baker scrubs his hands before he starts work? If the Government enforce this rule we will most likely get bread a day old and pay. more for it. I have seen children, with dirty faces and dirty noses, nibbling the bread as they take it home, and they would still have a nibble even if it was wrapped. We have got to take a lot on trust; otherwise make our own bread. —Yours, etc., 8.8. February 19, 1953.
