PERSIAN OIL SHIPMENT
CARGO SEALED IN STORAGE
(Rec. 8 p.m.) ROME, Feb. 16. Italian customs officers today sealed in a dockside storage tank the 5000 tons of Persian oil brought to Venice from Abadan by the Italian tanker Miriella. The disputed oil will remain there for two weeks while a Venice tribunal makes its decision on the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company’s demand for judicial sequestration. The company claims that the oil is stolen property, because, in its view, Persia made no effort to pay compensation when she nationalised, the oilfield. The president of the tribunal, who on Saturday ordered the oil to be impounded for 15 days, has promised a decision by March 1. Both the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and the “Supor Company,” the charterers of the Miriella, are preparing written evidence, which must be submitted to the Court by Thursday. If its demand is granted the British company is expected to ask the Rome Court for possession of the cargo, but, if it is refused, the company may still go to the Rome Court to ask for reimbursement of the value of the cargo and probably also for damages.
