SOUTH AUSTRALIA 276 FOR EIGHT
Lead of One Run On First Innings (Rec. 11.30 p.m.') ADELAIDE, Feb. 17. South Africa fought hard but unavailingly to finish off the South Australians’ second innings today to give themselves the chance of a win on the final day of the match tomorrow. They were frustrated by the State’s only two representatives in the Australian team for England—Graeme Hol* and Gil Langley. Hole made a century and took part in two big partnerships—lo 4 with Favell and 98 with Langley for the sixth wicket. The South Africans failed by one run to reach South Australia’s first innings total. Tayfield became the most prolific Wicket-taker in Australia when he carried his aggregate today to 66. J. C. White, of England, held the record of 65 first-class wickets (average 22.6 runs) set up ifi 1928-29. followed by another South African, R. O. Schwarz, in the 1910-11 tour and V. Mankad, of India (61 in 1947-48). South Africa’s pace attack was treated roughly today in contrast with the deference it was paid in the first innings. Melle had a fine spell in the morning. Then his steadiness wavered and he -became expensvie. Scores were:— SOUTH AFRICA First Innings W. R. Endean. c Langley, b Noblet 76 D. J. Innes, c Noblet, b Wilson .. 58 J. H. B.
