PRICE FOR BONER COW BEEF
EXPLANATION OF RECENT INCREASE North Island prices for cow beef, according to a Press Association message from Wellington, for the week ending February 21, are 67s 6d to 70s per 1001 b, compared with the South Island price of 645. “As a result of negotiations with Auckland canners who are participating in contracts with the United Kingdom Ministry of Food, scheduled prices for boner cow beef will be on the basis of 70s per 1001 b delivered to canners,” says the message. “It is expected that this price will be available for all boner cow beef which can be supplied in time to permit of canning being completed by September 30, 1953.” Three weeks ago the South Island price for boner cow beef was increased from 46s per 1001 b to 645. This increase, according to a Christchurch authority on mfeat schedules, is accounted for by the fact that the Auckland canners mentioned in the Press Association message are now able to pay considerably more for this class of meat than 8.23 d per lb, -the price allowed for in the Meat Board’s f.o.b. price. September 30 is the date on which the current meat contracts with the United Kingdom expire.
