IMPORT CONTROL IN AUSTRALIA
Further Easing In Restrictions (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 12,15 a.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 16. Australia would again ease her import restrictions in the coming financial year, the Prime Minister, Mr R. G. Menzies, disclosed today. He said that when the proposed new relaxation in controls was added to earlier easings it would represent a total increase of 25 per cent, in the rate of the flow of imports since the controls were imposed a year ago. Overseas reserves had improved steadily since the beginning of the export season to the point where the Government considered a further relaxation to be justified. Mr Menzies added: “Our view now is that for the coming year we should be in a position to afford imports about £50,000,000 higher than the rate had been assuming until recently/’ Details of the new relaxations were now being worked out and would be announced shortly. Mr Menzies said the relaxations would extend to most types of imports.
He said he was referring only to uon-dollar and non-Japanese imports. The dollar reserves of the sterling area had shown much improvement in recent months but they were still inadequate.
