N.Z. RECORD FOR GIRLS’ 220 YARDS (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 21. A new national record was set for the junior girls’ 220 yards breaststroke, when Miss Fay Tremaine (Dunedin) returned 2min 58 4-ssec at the opening of the Otago swimming championships. Miss Tremaine has a time of 2min 59sec awaiting recognition, and held the former record at 3min 3-ssec. The championships were notable, too. for the reappearance of Miss Jean Stewart, Otago Olympic swimmer, who won the 220 yards women’s backstroke title in 2min 50sec. four seconds outside her national record. Swimming backstroke in a 100 yards freestyle, she recorded 70 4-ssec to gain second placing. Another Otago Olympic swimmer. Lincoln Hurring, was beaten by J. Todd in the 100 yards men’s backstroke.
