COCOS ISLAND AIRFIELD

DEFENCE PLAN OF AUSTRALIA

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) PERTH. January 21. A huge airfield construction project at Cocos Island has been undertaken to protect Western Australia, said the Minister of the Navy and Air (Mr W. McMahon) today. Western Australia had a leading role in Indian Ocean defence, Mr McMahon said. The airfield was capable of taking any known kind of aircraft and in case of emergency Neptune long-range bombers could be based there.
